Our Giraffes Need a New Home

The African Veldt is home to the Oakland Zoo's herd of eight gentle, graceful giraffes and is one of the most popular animal exhibits at the Zoo. Our giraffe program is award winning, known and respected around the world for its progressive, innovative training and giraffe husbandry programs. Our herd is growing and they need a new barn, to provide a safe and comfortable home and contribute to their ongoing health and well-being.

This new barn is a keeper inspired 1500 square foot L-shaped facility that will feature twenty-foot ceilings, six skylights for natural light, keeper catwalks, heating system and four high access windows where the public will be able to watch giraffes interact with their trainers.

"We have a very serious responsibility to provide these animals with the best care in the best facility. It is the least we can do to repay them for all they give to us every single day!" - Giraffe Keeper Amy Phelps
