Oakland Zoo's Conservation Strategic Plan

March 10, 2025

At Oakland Zoo, we are dedicated to conservation of animals in the wild. Our passion for wildlife is evident in the rich timeline of conservation successes here in California, and around the globe. Last year, we stood on that foundation and envisioned where we want to go from here. As a team, we created a codified and inspiring, first ever, Oakland Zoo Conservation Strategic Plan for 2024-2027.

Oakland Zoo conservation leaders, including our CEO, focused, debated, and made thoughtful decisions based on the species we had at the zoo, the relationships we have built around the world, and the skills we possess, to select the areas we felt we could be the most impactful. Was it hard to prioritize? Yes! But through this plan, we see a clearer future with more focus and more possibilities to make a difference.

“Now is the time for bold, transformative action in conservation, both here in the San Francisco Bay Area and across the nation and world. We must act decisively, innovate relentlessly, value local knowledge, and refocus our efforts before irreversible damage is done.” -Nik Dehejia, CEO of Oakland Zoo

We determined we would have the most impact in three areas, which we are calling The Three Pillars:

And, while we continue to take action for all wildlife, we are focusing on 10 key species:

Our approach to saving species is built on alliances and a team approach. For each of our focus animals, there is a web of stakeholders with a vision to conserve them. We take pride in joining forces, forming collectives and launching and leading alliances. Within Oakland Zoo's staff, we have skills in vet medicine, education, social science, research, animal care, community co-design, conservation psychology, storytelling, and more. Each area and expertise within the Zoo is a key to our vision and impact.

Also key to our approach is community. The people living near to wildlife, who share the habitat and know the natural order of things, bring traditional ecological knowledge and experience-based solutions. Finding understanding and empathy for all stakeholders, and co-designing with those most vulnerable to living with these species, has brought us the greatest joy and biggest successes.

“The Zoo has refined our values, skills, and resources and is now poised to take focused action on long-term goals and push forward together to create a thriving planet.” -Amy Gotliffe, VP of Conservation at Oakland Zoo

With 30 years of experience to build on, our new Conservation Strategic Plan provides a clear and connected path forward. Of course, our members and guests are part of the plan...our team effort includes all of you!
